long - form - library

This is a remarkable piece of furniture. The concept was to design an environment in which to read and contemplate. Just as crucial was the notion that the piece be incredibly modern in its aesthetic. Ron Arad, a designer you may be familiar with, often i

The library relies on circular forces to grace it with immense strength. Yet, due to the subtle selection of thinner and thinner blockboards toward the top of the work, a great sense of delicacy is preserved. The library, as shown, is built from 15 modular boxes. Each bolts to the back of the next. All are clearly marked in order to assure accurate construction. The library boxes have no visible joins (aside from the bolts that affix them). And, the visible end grain of the blockboard has been beautifully exploited. Overall the finishes are very astute, combining the qualities of brushed varnish, lacquered edges, and 16 hand sprayed, carefully coloured panels. The scheme is akin to early Bauhaus or even more markedly, De Stijl movement approaches.

Assembly takes around two hours including the integrated electrics. Only 4 wire junctions and 4 internal plugs are required. All lamps operate on 3amp fuses and feature flourescent tubes. The separate reading lamps run on a 12amp halogen based circuit and are suitably shielded. The whole circuit then operates quite safely from one plug point via a 15m, sunburst yellow, triple core, arctic cable. Indestructable!

Oh, and no, it won't roll off, or tip over! The first two box sections adjacent to the base unit are flat bottomed - it would require a superhuman effort to even push it that far, after which there would be absolutely nowhere else for it to go. The movement is actually incredibly gentle and relaxing, especially as the ceiling remains static whilst you and the apex of the circles move together harmoniously. A wonderful sensation I can assure you!

The piece has been exhibited extensively and has met with unanimous approval regarding build safety and electrical integrity. The last show was quite major and the library was brought to absolutely sparkling condition.

The piece stands at 246cm. Please bear this in mind. The largest of the box units is sized specifically in order to fit comfortably through any domestic door. Fear not, IKEA flat pack will seem like an almighty chore by the time you have assembled your library. And by jove the result will be a great deal more worthwhile of the effort. A full set of instructions will be provided along with the relevant spanners and such, as will a beautifully printed document showing the life of the library from a blank page to a fully realised, exceptional piece of furniture.

My company ifsodoso are now moving into the commercial sector. The library and all other products will be made by machines in future. This is a great opportunity to own something breathtaking, painstakingly hand built by an emerging designer with a great future. If you wish to purchase the library, please be assured that once you have selected a suitable spot, within a matter of hours, your life will never be the same again. UK design rights (copyright) are in place so be confident that you will not see another example quite like this anywhere else.
