Charles P. Kay was charged with second-degree arson, sending explosives with intent to cause damage and possession of a Molotov cocktail, the report said. He could face up to 20 years in prison.

Van Elslander and his family were home when the Molotov cocktail struck their home in the Detroit area's upscale Grosse Pointe Park area after midnight Friday. It shattered a window and started a fire, but it was put out before firefighters arrived, according to an Associated Press report.

Police have not disclosed a motive.
