Italian furniture giant Calligaris acquires Dutch furniture Fatboy

The specific amount of the acquisition has not been announced.

On August 6, the Italian furniture group Calligaris Group announced that it has completed the acquisition of Fatboy, a home furnishing brand headquartered in the Netherlands and the first non-Italian company to join the group.

According to Italian media estimates, Calligaris invested about 120 million euros in the acquisition.

Fatboy was established in Den Bosch, the Netherlands in 2002, and initially produced the super-large lazy sofa designed by the Finnish interior architect Jukka Setala. Now it has become a cross-category design brand for lighting, indoor and outdoor furniture, and accessories. Fatboy CEO Petra Vos said that the company's 2020 turnover increased by 10 million euros to 44.6 million euros.

Calligaris was founded in 1923 and is headquartered in Manzano, Italy. In 2018, it was acquired by the private equity Alpha Fund, which is one of the leaders in the global high-end furniture market. The group mainly develops, manufactures, assembles and distributes a variety of furniture through the four sub-brands of Calligaris, Connubia, Ditre Italia and Luceplan.

Through the acquisition of Fatboy, Calligaris will expand the outdoor furniture market and will benefit from Fatboy' s online sales capabilities and experience in the omni-channel strategy.

With the support of Calligaris Group, Fatboy will expand its global influence. The acquisition will enhance the production technology and capacity of the two companies and maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of its supply chain.

Regarding the acquisition, Calligaris Group CEO Stefano Rosa Uliana commented: “The acquisition of Fatboy fits well with Calligaris’ s development strategy. We look forward to working with the Fatboy team to maximize the synergy between the companies to enhance and strengthen our brand’s market status."
