On March 8, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao stated in the second "Ministerial Channel" interview event of the Fourth Session of the 13th National People's Congress that traditional consumption needs to be upgraded.

Wang Wentao believes that the potential of traditional consumption is still great. For example, the traditional consumption of "Four Guardian Warriors" home appliances, home furnishings, catering, and automobiles account for a quarter of our total retail sales.

"Take home appliances, especially energy-saving, green and environmentally friendly home appliances, which also have a large market. I went to the countryside, where water and electricity conditions have improved, and the market for rural household appliances is gradually expanding. Therefore, I think traditional consumption needs to be upgraded."

Since last year, the Ministry of Commerce has repeatedly mentioned that it will boost the consumption of home appliances and furniture.

On November 26, 2020, the Ministry of Commerce held an on-site meeting to promote the consumption upgrade action plan in Beijing. The meeting mentioned the need to accelerate the release of the consumption potential of goods and services, boost the consumption of home appliances and furniture, expand the consumption of imported goods, and carry out innovative consumption promotion activities.

On January 5 this year, the Ministry of Commerce, the Development and Reform Commission and other 12 departments issued the Notice on Several Measures to Boost Bulk Consumption and Promote the Release of Rural Consumption Potential, which put forward five tasks, including promoting the consumption of furniture, home appliances, and encouraging to develop new models such as "Internet + recycling of waste materials" and furniture and household appliances leasing.

On January 29, the Ministry of Commerce held a press conference on business work and operations. Zhu Xiaoliang, director of the Consumer Promotion Department of the Ministry of Commerce, introduced that this year will promote commodity consumption and encourage the development of furniture and home appliances trade-in.

In mid-February, the Ministry of Commerce issued a notice on the establishment of green shopping malls in 2021. It is pointed out that it is necessary to encourage trade and circulation enterprises to increase energy-saving facilities and equipment renovation and transformation, and expand the sales of energy-saving home appliances and green products through activities such as replacing old home appliances and furniture with new ones, and promote green consumption.

Industry experts believe that with the implementation and advancement of the country's policies to promote rural furniture and home improvement consumption, the next wave of furniture consumption will be set off in rural areas.
