Century-old home furnishing brand ABC Carpet & Home intends to file for bankruptcy protection

If a company takes over the acquisition, this 125-year-old store may appear for the first time that the descendants of the founder did not participate in the operation of the company.

According to people familiar with the matter, ABC Carpet & Home, a century-old home furnishing brand, will file for bankruptcy protection this week, and a number of companies interested in accepting it have lined up to rescue it from financial difficulties.

Some interested buyers have submitted tenders, including a consortium formed by Iranian carpet dealer and private equity company Windsong Global and brand licensing company Hilco Brands. A source familiar with the situation told the media that the group is expected to become a strong bidder. But for now, Hilco and Windsong declined to comment on the acquisition.

"The takeover company' s strong intention to acquire ABC makes ABC company confident that the auction will go smoothly." The source.

In its statement on the 8th, ABC did not mention the issue of bankruptcy applications, but stated that it "is in in-depth discussions with a strategic investor and is jointly formulating a financial plan to continue the company' s 125-year history. In this process, the business operate as usual."

The source also said that in the past year, ABC defaulted on rents of more than $1 million, and the owner Paulette Cole had invested a lot of money to maintain the family business. If the company is acquired, it will probably be the first time since its establishment more than a century ago that the descendants of the founder have not participated in the operation of the company.

Kerr once said in an interview that the retailer’s Achilles’ heel is its lack of experience in e-commerce operations, and she has been working hard to strengthen this experience in recent years. Moreover, she has closed many of the company's physical stores and scaled back development.

Hopefully, as the company' s announcement says, investors with strong intentions to acquire will take over, and this brand with a history of more than 100 years will be preserved.
