The RMIT Design Hub is holding the exceptionally intelligent work of London-based Martino Gamper, who is in Australia to share with the nation his infamous ‘100 Chairs in 100 Days: Martino Gamper at RMIT Design Hub’ project. The project originated from Gamper’s idea to collect broken and unwanted chairs, which he found from London’s alleyways and friends’ homes and then utilising his creativity and improvisation skills to convert each chair – one per day – and create a brand new form that goes beyond the object and its capabilities to reveal the resonant story behind each chair.

Having toured across the world, the ‘100 Chairs in 100 Days: Martino Gamper at RMIT Design Hub’ project is being presented in Australia for the first time ever as an inspiring exhibition, proving that objects of brilliance can be made even with strict limitations. The exhibition is currently taking place at RMIT’s Design Hub from where Gamper has constructed for the Melbourne exhibition a 100th chair within a single day. The exhibition is also holding a workshop as an ‘ideas exchange’ where Gamper will share with listeners his concepts and philosophies. Curator, Design Hub, Fleur Watson believes the entire exhibition will have a positive and unique effect on the design community.

“We are delighted to be working with Martino Gamper to bring 100 Chairs in 100 Days to RMIT Design Hub. The exhibition’s objects speak to ideas that move well beyond the fetishization of the ‘designer’ chair and are imbued with narrative, poetics, humour and cross-cultural references.” Watson says.

“Martino’s visit also provides an important opportunity to engage our design community with Martino’s thinking and research via participation within an invited workshop for local practitioners. This kind of exchange is central to our intent at Design Hub to curate exhibitions and programs that focus on design ideas and experimentation,” she adds. The exhibition is open to the public and will close on 9 April 2016.
