Chinese-made bedroom furniture duties up for review again

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. International Trade Commission has begun its second five-year review to determine whether to continue to impose duties on Chinese-made wooden bedroom furniture.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. International Trade Commission has begun its second five-year review to determine whether to continue to impose duties on Chinese-made wooden bedroom furniture.

The review is the second since the U.S. Department of Commerce issued the initial antidumping order on Jan. 4, 2005.

In the first five-year review, which occurred in 2010, the ITC determined that the duties were warranted for another five years. Following its decision, the DOC issued a continuation of the order, which began on Dec. 30, 2010.

Like the previous five-year review, the latest review will determine if revoking the order will lead to the continuation or recurrence of material injury to domestic wooden bedroom producers.

The duties are meant to level the playing field for domestic producers that have been injured by unfairly priced imports. Theses duties, which once were paid to the supporters of the original antidumping petition, are now paid to the U.S. government.

The duties are applied to Chinese factories but paid by importers of record of the merchandise, which largely includes coordinated suites featuring a bed, dresser, chest, nightstand and mirror.

The ITC will determine whether it conducts a full or expedited review based on the types of responses it receives. The ITC has asked interested parties to respond to its notice in the Federal Register by Dec. 2. Additional comments on these responses may be filed with the ITC by Jan. 14, 2016.
