The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) has hired Mark Patti as its Southern California Program Coordinator.  Mr. Patti will work with municipalities, retailers and other generators of mattresses, transporters and recyclers as MRC develops and implements its mattress recycling program in the state.  MRC is a non-profit organization created by the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA)  to develop statewide recycling programs in the three states that passed mattress recycling laws in 2013 (California, Connecticut and Rhode Island).  MRC’s objective is to facilitate mattress recycling in a consumer friendly, efficient and cost-effective manner.

“We are very pleased to have Mark join the MRC team as our Southern California Program Coordinator,” said Ryan Trainer, president of both MRC and ISPA. “MRC will benefit greatly from Mark’s extensive experience in the recycling and environmental communities as we establish a robust mattress recycling program for California residents.”

MRC will submit its mattress recycling plan to California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) in July 2015.  Once approved, the California program will be administered by MRC under CalRecycle’s oversight, with the program formally commencing in early 2016.  The program will be funded by a visible point-of-purchase fee that retailers and other mattress sellers will collect from consumers.   The fee for California has yet to be determined but will apply to each mattress and foundation unit sold to consumers in the state.

The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is a non-profit organization that will develop and operate mattress recycling programs in California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. In 2013, all three states passed laws requiring mattress manufacturers to develop programs to manage discarded mattresses.
