The bedding industry posted a strong performance in October, with units jumping 5.8% and the wholesale value of bedding shipments rising a healthy 9.3%.
That was the second straight month of solid gains, following lackluster results in August, and it shows that the industry approaches the end of the year with some momentum.
The monthly Bedding Barometer report issued by the International Sleep Products Assn. said the average unit price increased 3.3% in October, to $223.40.
For the first 10 months of the year, bedding units are up 2.0% and the wholesale value of bedding shipments is up 6.0%, ISPA said. The average unit price is up 4.0%, to $224.97.
The figures reflect the performance of 14 bedding producers who account for a majority of bedding business in the country, the bedding industry’s trade association reported.
ISPA also released a three-month rolling total that shows mattress units up 5.0% from August to October, with foundation units up 1.6%. Overall, units were up 3.4% in that time period.
Mattress dollars were up 9.2% in that same time period, while foundation dollars were up 2.7%. Overall, dollars were up 8.1% in the last three months. The average unit price for mattresses was up 4.0% in the August-October quarter, while it was up 1.1% for foundations. Overall, the average unit price was up 4.5% in that quarter, to $229.95.
The Bedding Barometer reports reflect the performance of producers who last year accounted for about 70% of total industry units and about 78% of the wholesale revenue of the full market. But ISPA cautions that those results may not necessarily reflect the performance of the entire industry. Changes in market share between the participating companies and distribution shifts can account for the changes in the monthly figures as opposed to increases or decreases in the overall market, ISPA said.
