On August 17, the US Department of Commerce released its July retail sales report. The report shows that in July, American furniture and household products continued to maintain a growth momentum, with a year-on-year increase of 15.6%.

In July of this year, the sales of the household goods industry in the United States jumped from $10.34 billion in July 2020 to $11.95 billion. Although the data fell by 0.6% month-on-month, it is worth noting that the growth rate of the two data of the year-on-year and month-on-month sales of the home furnishing industry is better than the overall retail environment.

In addition, another increase this month marks the 14th consecutive year-on-year increase in sales in this industry.

On the other hand, non-store retailers, mainly e-commerce retail, recorded a growth of 5.9%, but fell 3.1% from the previous month. At the same time, non-store retail is one of the few industries where sales have not experienced double-digit year-on-year growth, including building materials and gardening supplies distributors that have increased by 7.5%.

In the three-month period ending in July, furniture and household goods store sales increased by 30.5% compared to the same period last year, surpassing the 20.6% growth of all retail and food services and the 8.6% growth of non-store retailers.

Looking back at the household sales in June, it was very similar to July, with a year-on-year increase of more than 15%, but a month-on-month decline. It shows that the current U.S. industry has improved compared with last year when the epidemic broke out, but the summer, which should have been the peak season for home retail, is still declining month by month, indicating that insufficient supply and low consumer willingness may have contributed to this phenomenon.
