Levin Furniture has completed the installation of solar panels at its new 76,000-square-foot showroom here in a continued commitment to green initiatives.

The Smithton, Pa.-based Top 100 company partnered with Third Sun Solar of Athens, Ohio, which installed 315-watt solar panels — a total of 216 of them across 4,500 square feet of rooftop at its store on Nagel Road. The Cleveland-area store is Levin’s fourth to feature solar energy, and the retailer conservatively estimates the 68.04-kilowatt system will provide up to 8% of the location’s power usage.

“Solar is part of a larger commitment to environmental issues,” said Robert Levin, president of the 31-store, Top 100 company. “We feel it is important for community relations to be involved and it’s good for employees as well — knowing that we are part of energy solutions.”

In addition to adding solar, Levin Furniture has implemented other green initiatives at the location, including: energy efficient light bulbs, programmable digital thermostats, motion sensitive lighting, green cleaning products, and recycled paper products.

“Levin’s is committed to minimizing solid waste materials sent to landfills and maximizes recycling of usable materials,” the retailer said in a release. At its Smithton distribution center, the company recycles more than 800 tons of material each year.

The new Avon location is one of two, larger replacement showrooms the retailer opened in March.
