Personalization takes shape into the “/” Lamp
Ubikubi brings to you a new sort of designed product: the “/” Lamp. This is a uniquely created lighting object, which gives its owner the opportunity to choose whether to change the appearance or leave it as it came in the box.
Wanting to question and search for the real emotional value of an object, the designer, Dragos Motica, placed a rock in the hand of the end user, challenging him to smash his new acquisition, in order to give it a more personalized look. The possibility given to choose between breaking it and leaving it intact is meant to establish that personal, powerful relationship/connection. It empowers the buyer, leaving him with the power of making a decision, to choose between either one of two opposite attitudes: action / inaction. This is already a personal choice.
In order to better understand the concept, please allow us to describe the “/” Lamp’s features: the body is produced by pouring smooth reinforced concrete (colored with the help of pigments, at need) into a silicone mold. The resulting concrete shape is then air dried and, ultimately, polished until it reaches an even exterior. This cylindrical object receives a heart, an inside core made of round shaped cork, cut on a CNC machine. The cork inside is meant to protect the LED lights if you choose to break it.
All of the materials used for conceiving the lamp are inspired by the industrial facilities, mainly by construction sites: concrete, reinforcing wire, climbing rope, LED, birch plywood and spool for high voltage wires.
Of course, the “/” Lamp is designed to look very good and have a practical use in its unbroken shape, but wouldn’t you, as a user, like to decide which of the two states you like more? Lately, all that matters to us is how we can mentally manipulate the “value” of an object by passing it through our personal filter. Our main characteristic as human is uniqueness. By breaking it you are becoming the designer of a unique object. By leaving it unbroken, you chose the serialized object because you like it as it is. So you are already taking a very subjective decision.
The “/” Lamp (“OR” Lamp) puts into the client’s consideration the following opposite concepts: new/ used; esthetic/ unaesthetic; new/ broken; serial / unique; impersonal/ personal; common/ particular.
