Belgium Is Design: My creations make you feel like a shetland pony under a rainbow

In Milano Satellite 2018, Gewoon David brought his works of art—Table Hulot and received a lots of appreciations...

My designs always start with a simple idea, a movie (scene), fashion, etc.

After that, i started an extensive research based on those. I want to know everything!

Afterwards pick an idea or detail from the research preferred, start to brainstorm in my head.

It could take several days before i put something on paper.

When i’m completely convinced, i start to draw.

My sketches may look like cartoons or drawings out of coloring books for children, simple but effective.

When the design starts to be on point i start to look for materials.

The material should never be a starting point. The general feeling does.

The material should always complement my story.

During this last process, i focus on details.

It’s all in the details which depend. Details lift a design to the top.

I can only hope that one day my work will influence students.

And one day, i could teach the future designers.

—— Gewoon David, Designers, Milano SaloneSatellite 2018

Gewoon David

Good temple, polite, playful manner, full of imagination... was the first impression we had for Mr. Gewoon. In SaloneSatellite 2018, JJGLE.COM have seen a various of works of art, creative, modern, sense of design, surreal, and more. But you have never ever been touched by those kind of series of works, pink, warmly, lovely, like a child’s taste.

Maybe you have a question: Was the designer a Child?

The truth is: the designer is really a belgian man with a career of primary school teacher. It was his first time to attend Milano Satellite, and he have gotten a lots of supports and appreciations from others towards his work.

"I can only hope my creations make you feel like a Shetland pony under a rainbow…", that's his works' power.

The MESfits—Three knives

JJGLE.COM has a great honor to make an interview with him.

His works-Table Hulot in the form of stool, but it doesn't a stool, it's a table where you can put the food on it and eat with people you love, it's a private space which reminds of the good moments you passed with your family, your lovers,...

Reason for changing the career from a primary school teacher to a designer:

As a teacher, David always encouraged his students to follow their dreams and reach for the stars. After some years, he realized: I wasn’t doing that by myself. So he decided to stop teaching and follow his heart. David was convinced that stopping was the best lesson he ever gave to his children.

The inspiration of design:

My inspiration often comes from movies, theatre or fashion, said David.

“Almodóvar is my true hero; Wes Anderson and Jacques Tati share the second place. The Belgian theatre group Abattoir Fermé inspires me as well.”

Style and features of works of arts:

"As a designer, I don’t want to have to choose between art and design. They should overlap seamlessly. While art exists in a restriction free space with the objective of touching souls, design allows itself to be constrained by the limits of functionality. But I strongly believe design can move us as well with its simplicity or excess and with its beauty or deviation.

"Everything i make should tell a story. It’s an immersive experience.”

"Stop saying less is more. Less is less. I’m on a diet. I eat less. But I’m still hungry for more. Nobody just eats the recommended amount. 20 grams of crisps is nothing, same for design.”

"Feelings come first! Emotional designs are durable designs.”

"I can only hope my creations make you feel like a Shetland pony under a rainbow…"

Opinions about China furniture market:

“I’m really interested in the Chinese furniture market. I would like to share with people my work all over the world. Showing some of my works at a furniture fair in China would be great. “, he said.

If anyone in China is interested in one of his products they always can contact me. David will take care it gets there.

Feeling towards this Salone Del Milano:

“The Salone was great. It has a lot of hard work and i made some nice contacts.”

The people who loved Table Hulot came from all over the world.

Every culture understands the importance of eating together and creating a good memory together. It’s a universal idea.

Impression about works of art from Chinese designers or China furniture brand in Milan:

“I was very impressed by the booth of The Shanghai Institute of Visual Art.” Most of all by student and designer Will Fan who created a chair that makes people interact in a new way. He got inspired by tea cups and created a very beautiful and elegant piece of furniture that shows the fragility of the tea cups.

And also Rachel Liang’s piece took inspiration from a birdcage to create a cabinet system.

Both show that inspiration is everywhere around us. We just have to open our eyes.
