Ikea has hired contractors to build its second Dallas-Fort Worth area location, in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The retailer expects to break ground next month and open the store in the fall of 2017, pending remaining permits. Mycon General Contractors will serve as construction manager for the Ikea Grand Prairie site work and store development project.
“With a contractor onboard, plans can proceed towards opening the future Ikea Grand Prairie,” said Lars Petersson, Ikea U.S. president. “This store will provide a more convenient Ikea shopping experience for current and potential customers throughout central and western parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex who maybe live too far from Ikea Frisco.”
Located approximately 14 miles west of downtown Dallas and 18 miles east of downtown Fort Worth, the 290,000-square-foot future Ikea Grand Prairie will be built on 30 acres along the eastern side of State Highway 161 and Mayfield Road, north of Interstate-20. The additional 15 acres of land contiguous to the store eventually could be developed to accommodate opportunities for ancillary commercial or retail uses.
Ikea is also evaluating potential on-site power generation. It has a renewable energy presence at nearly 90 percent of its U.S. locations.
Ikea Grand Prairie will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 50 inspirational room settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area and a 450-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties.
Besides Ikea Frisco, also in the Dallas area, Ikea’s other Texas locations are in Houston and Round Rock.
