On March 22, 2016, Beijing witnessed the convening of Sino-Finland Wood Summit. The Summit was co-organized by Finnish Sawmills Association, the "Wood from Finland" Program of Finnish Sawmills, China National Furniture Association, China National Forest Products Industry Association, China Timber & Wood Products Distribution Association and China Wood Protection Industry Association. More than 200 delegates of fields such as forestry, sawmilling processing, wood distribution, wood protection, wood structure and decoration from both China and Finland attended the Summit. Kai Merivuori, the general manager of Finnish Sawmills hosted the Summit.
Zhu Changling, the president of China National Furniture Association mentioned that Finnish spruce, pinus densiflora and other Nordic coniferous woods are mainly used for kids furniture and accessories of the wooden furniture by virtue of smooth wood texture, tight and fine growth rings, light colors, less paint usage, high air permeability, wood shaving simplification, natural rot resistance, insect prevention and other excellent features. Finnish coniferous sawn timber is of outstanding quality and environmental performance, and its application to the furniture industry can effectively improve the environmental performance of products.
Kimmo Tiilikainen, the Minister of Agriculture and the Environment of Finland, said that 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in Paris, and all the participants signed "Paris Agreement" aiming at relieving global warming, by which, we could see the global environment protection awareness was increasingly strengthened. It is an efficient way to relieve global warming by replacing the energy-extensive consumption products with wood products. The wood products from sustainable operation forest farm can make effective carbon sink, which can reduce 189 million tons carbon emissions yearly.
Feng Jiaping, chief engineer of State Forestry Administration of China, believed that both China and Finland were big forestry countries; this brought a good cooperation prospect. Finland is provided rich forestry resources, advanced forestry industry and improved forestry management system, while China is equipped with substantial industrial base, large market and developing potential, and such a high complementarity will provide wide space for the forestry cooperation of both countries.
Juha Peltomaki, director of the "Wood from Finland" Program introduced the Program promoted by Finnish wood industry, supported under Finnish government and aiming at driving the wood material and product trade between China and Finland.
