American retailer and manufacturer Ethan Allen last month cut the ribbon on its 75th location in China, a multi-level flagship store in Haikou, capital of the Hainan province.

The brand shares the space with Markor Home Furnishings, its partner in China. The design represents the partnership’s “new generation” retail direction, with a classical facade and marble-clad interiors, Ethan Allen said in a press release. A similar flagship store is planned for Beijing later this year.

“We are taking the retail experience to the next level,” Farooq Kathwari, the Danbury-based company’s CEO, said at a white-carpet opening ceremony that drew hundreds of guests, officials said.

Ethan Allen said it is in the midst of a product reinvention, introducing hundreds of styles and increasing its already strong commitment to producing them in North America. The brand now makes more than two-thirds of its products in its North American plants and has an enthusiastic clientele in China, Kathwari said.

“This is a market that cares deeply about quality and has a passion for classic American style,” he said. “Needless to say, we feel right at home here.”

The brand has added 11 Design Centers in the past 12 months in domestic markets like Houston, Las Vegas and Marlton, N.J., and internationally in places like Dubai and Doha, Qatar. Thirteen more openings are planned for the next 12 months, with a continued focus on China, the company said.

“As an American brand, we draw upon influences from all over the world,” said Kathwari, “which is one of the many things that continue to keep Ethan Allen so relevant all over the world.”
