China is in the tide of shopping centers developing. Commercial real estate service company CBRE reports that in 2013, 9 of the top 10 cities with the biggest total area of new shopping centers are in China, more than half of the world new shopping centers under construction are in China as well.
Chengdu, the capital city of west province Sichuan, experienced an explosive growth of the total area of shopping centers. With more than 1 million sqm of new constructed in 2013, Chengdu ranked the top in the world. The giant Chengdu IFS with 300 stores is just one of the new options for 15 million Chengdu people; the modern New Century Global Center becomes the hugest building in the world; the nearby Daci Temple urban renewal project has a lot of stores, hotels, offices and apartments.
CBRE also reports that there are 800 multi-function complex with hotels, office buildings and retail stores under construction now in China, with total area up to 0.3 billion sqm, equal the 1000 times of the biggest shopping center in the USA, Mall of America.
The report states that 65% luxury brands including Prada, Burberry and Hermes didn’t accomplish the store opening plan in China last year. In the biggest cities of China the retail rental keeps high but in some second tier cities it starts to go down.
